This weekend I powered through two new novels, All American Boys by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely and Geek Drama by Holly Smale.
All American Boys by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely tackles the incredibly difficult topics of racism and police brutality. This book shows an amazing depiction of the struggle of two boys, one black and one white, to deal with one violent event from the two boy’s perspectives. It is an incredible look at the journey these two boys go on and the struggle between right and wrong. This book could have easily been dismissed by the public if it had been written solely by Reynolds or Kiely, but their co-writing enables the story to be told respectfully from both perspectives.
Harriet Manners is a geek. This is obvious by the multitude of interesting facts she knows and shares throughout the book. The book shows brief glimpses of the relationships Harriet has including the relationship with the girl who has bullied her for numerous years, Alexa. Interesting twists include Harriet being a fashion model. Who would have guessed? It’s a quick read that might appeal to some reluctant readers.
